GECKO/fund
€1 million for free and open source projects
For the people and communities building the software that finance runs on.
The problem
The finance industry runs on open-source software. Trading platforms, data pipelines, serialisation libraries, build tools — critical infrastructure that processes billions in transactions daily was built by people who chose to make their work free for everyone.
These are the people who build and advance the core infrastructure the industry depends on. Much of this work moves faster and goes further than its corporate equivalents, and it's given away for free.
Most of them receive little to no financial support. When they burn out or move on, the software degrades — and the companies that depend on it have no fallback.
What Gecko Fund does
We provide direct financial support to open-source projects that are widely used in finance but underfunded relative to their impact. We focus on the technology stacks that power trading, data processing, and financial infrastructure:
We prioritise projects where funding can have outsized impact — important work held back by a lack of resources. We are also interested in projects that improve AI-assisted code generation, strengthen documentation, or contribute to the long-term reliability of critical software.
Individuals, project teams, communities, and organisations can all apply. If your project is essential to the finance ecosystem but falls outside the categories above, we still encourage you to reach out.
