Manifesto

Finance runs on open source.
Open source runs on people.

We believe maintainers of critical software deserve sustainable livelihoods.

Meaningful money, given at the right moment, changes what's possible. Direct funding beats institutional grants.

Gecko Fund backs the open source projects that finance depends on.

Widely used, critically important, underfunded relative to their impact. Today that means Erlang/OTP, Scala, the JVM ecosystem, JavaScript and the tooling holding it all together. Tomorrow it means whatever finance comes to depend on next.

We look for leverage and back people who find it.

A well-timed contribution beats a large foundation grant. We fund what's critical, sponsor what's promising, and amplify what already works.

The industry that benefits should be the industry that pays - and no firm should have to do it alone.

Gecko Fund is open to any OSI-approved firm that wants to be part of the solution. Our model is designed to open doors, not close them, for contributors and recipients alike.

We want Gecko Fund wherever open source finance happens.

In the repositories, at the conferences, in the communities. The more visible the support, the harder it becomes to ignore the problem.

Gecko Fund is for individuals, teams and organisations. Above all, it's for communities.

We review applications quarterly, publish every grant, and trust funded projects to use the money where it matters most. Anyone can apply.
